SOUTHBANK. An upscale chain that prides itself on more than American Angus. From the classy, masculine decor to the topnotch service, praise has been showered upon Morton's, and justly so. Expect to be treated like royalty by the friendly wait staff, who present dinner selections by bringing out a cart of options then giving you the low-down about each choice. Needless to say, some things in life are well worth their price tags.

DOWNTOWN. This Kansas City-style steakhouse is considered one of the best in the country, and its branches are perennial award-winners in cities all over the US. The aromas of succulent Prime Kansas City strips, double-cut lamb chops and filet mignons will have your mouth watering in anticipation of what's sure to be a fantastic meal. Regulars also rave about the delicious steak soup appetizer. Plaza III also offers an extensive wine list and offers patio seating.

SOUTHBANK. This is the "Home of Serious Steaks," and one visit will tell you that's more than a slogan. The steaks at Ruth's Chris are famed for their sizzle, achieved by a dollop of butter dropped on hot-from-the-oven cuts, and yours will still be sputtering when it's placed in front of you. Calorie-counters beware: this place isn't for you! The establishment also takes pride in its great service, extensive wine list and clubby elegance.

MANDARIN. Jacksonville isn't short on quality steakhouses, and if you've got the taste for red meat there certainly are a number of high-end chains to choose from. That said, wise palates know that local standbys are sometimes the best bets ­ that's certainly the case with The Tree, where they've been serving up premium-cut steaks long enough to get it right. The clubby setting ­ dark colors, stained wood walls ­ gives the place a bit of a timeless feel, and the service is consistently professional and courteous.
